I assume that the baby was thrown away somewhere on that dump. Generally, I feel that the focus is very much on Colan and on how he sees and experiences things. So it could perhaps be intentional that we don't really know what happened to the baby or to Vic and the others because Colan doesn't want to think about them.
As for the end, well, the author did take almost a 2-year break before she finished the last chapters after Colan was thrown out. I can't blame her for rushing and not going into too much details with some plot points in order to get the story done.
Hm, I always imagined Colan to be skinny and lanky with sharp facial features and a fuzzy buzz cut. He'd be a good-looking teenager if he weren't so emaciated and so defeated by life. Whereas Vasco has a southern European look going, muscled and toned, stone-faced, hard eyes, square and angular features but attractive and you can see the man takes no bullshit XD
